Mommy, Me & Teen Makes Three

As the mother of two I know finding things to do for your family can make all the difference in how your day goes.  Columbia offers a wide variety of things to do for all ages.  With our moderate annual temperatures outdoor activities are always a possibility.  Nationally renowned Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens is a wonderful place for the whole family.  From lions and tigers and bears to pony rides and beautiful gardens, children of all ages can enjoy.  Another fantastic place outdoors is downtown's Finlay Park where a lake, waterfall and playground provide a joyous time for all.  Saluda Shoals, in the Irmo area, offers a great place to escape the dog days of summer with a myriad of activities including a water playground, hiking, horseback riding and picnic areas.  Frankie's Fun Park is an amusement center offering an arcade, bumper cars, laser tag, mini golf and pizza.  If your family enjoys being on the water, Lake Murray is sure to please.  A 50,000-acre lake which extends through the Irmo, Chapin and Lexington areas, Lake Murray is a great place to boat, fish, swim, ski, or just have a relaxing day in the sun with your family.

For those days your family prefers to be indoors, Columbia has several libraries throughout the city and outlying areas.  The Main branch, located downtown, offers story time, puzzles, crafts and every book imaginable.  Also located downtown is Edventureland Children's Museum.  This is a phenomenal place, which offers children a chance to learn while interacting with various exhibits.  There are also several YMCA locations throughout Columbia, which offer a chance to recharge your batteries, as well as providing fun for the kids.  With exercise classes, weight rooms, summer camp programs, youth sports and after school activities, local YMCA's have much to offer everyone.  Each location offers a variety of different activities for the family.

Please see our Local Resources page for links to family activities mentioned here as well as other activities for you and your family.
