Metropolitan Columbia
After General Sherman's razing of Columbia during the Civil War, much of Columbia's historic antebellum charm was lost. However, this opened the door for Columbia to grow as a metropolitan city. We have grown from a large southern town to a moderate size southern city in the past 25 years. Columbia is South Carolina's state capital as well as it's business capital. It is home to the country's largest Army training facility, Ft. Jackson. The city proudly boasts several cultural centers that host numerous events throughout the year. Home to the University of South Carolina, Columbia has much to offer in the way of education. The University has become a major leader in alternative fuel research as well as maintaining a traditional college academic environment. Some of the state's best public school districts are in the Columbia area as well.
Columbia is located in the heart of South Carolina and offers much in the way of fun and entertainment. Whether you enjoy visiting museums, attending a Carolina football game, or the nationally renowned Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens, Columbia is a place that has it all. With our wonderful climate, many new residents are lured in each year. The four seasons are distinct; known for our relatively mild winters, beautiful and bountiful springs, hot southern summers and warm Indian, summer-like autumns. Columbia offers wonderful county recreation centers, Lake Murray and Lake Wateree, and Sesqui State Park, just to name a few.
